One round from AP English Language and Composition — Unit 8: Style — Writing

Four students see

Gerund Phrase

An -ing verb form functioning as a noun with its objects.

The fifth sees

Noun-from-verb

That is all they get — a hint, not the term the other four are holding — and they have to describe it first.

The Mole knows a verb is behaving like a noun. They can describe an -ing word doing a noun’s job and sound right — and then describe a participial phrase, which is the same -ing word doing an adjective’s job. On the page the two are identical; said out loud they are not.

Recognizing a word is not knowing it

Every term here is something a student is meant to USE, not recognise. If they cannot say what it does in a sentence, they will not deploy it in a paragraph.
